Chincoteague + Assateague Island {hidden treasure}

There are loads of treasures in Chincoteague but I'm only sharing my "Top 6".

For the past 3 years, I have been driving by this home every trip.  It's my favorite house on the island because of its coastal-cottage charm.  This visit I noticed a refurbished VW van in the driveway.  Sweet!!
Another local "hot spot"that I love is Woody's Eatery & Woody's Beach BBQ.

It is the coolest restaurant on the island!  They have the largest tic-tac-toe boards in the world {I embellished a little, maybe the whole island}.  From hanging hammocks to adirondack chairs anyone will feel right at home.  The food is delish and let's not forget their lemonade.  Hits the spot for those 95+ degree weather.  It will fit perfectly in your hand as you are swinging in a hammock enjoying their nostalgic surroundings.  They have the most amazing Bar-B-Que and my favorite, Shrimp Tacos.  Mmmm........   Ahhh...........
Take notice!  There is that VW van AGAIN!!

I got nosy and asked around, what a small island, come to find out.........
The people who own my favorite house {pictured above} also own Woody's Eatery.

 So if your in Chincoteague make sure you drop in Woody's Eatery and pull up an adirondack chair, your gonna wanna stay a while.  Don't forget your camera!!

It's definitely the cutest library on the block.  This quant little building makes me want to move here just so I can spend my afternoons with my head in a borrowed book.  This library is ran by volunteers!!  Thats right you heard me, it is not supported by tax dollars but by local residents volunteering their time to support such a great community cause.
Timothy Hill House
5122 Main Street

Circa 1800 with log plank construction and a wooden fireplace {yes, a WOODEN fireplace}.  It is the first house in Chincoteague to be registered with the National Register of Historical Places and Virginia Historic Landmark.  Small and quant, hard to believe that people lived in such small quarters.  It's about the size of my closest.  {For more info.}
I can't find one drop of information about this little shack we stumbled upon.  So I'm naming it the Knick Knack Shack.  It was the neatest place with the most treasures anyone could wish for.  The old saying "one man's junk is another man's treasure" should have a picture of this place next to it.

The kids went nuts touching anything and everything from shells to whistles {yuck!!}.  The most amazing thing to me was the floor.  Made of cobblestone but it looked as if no two bricks were alike.  I asked the woman working about them and her response was a lot of them had come from customers dropping them off over the years.  There were hundreds with family names on them some that said "Merry Christmas" and "Seasons Greetings" to symbols with no meaning known to me.  It was a site to see.  On the outside wall read the quote......

"There is nothing in any world, galaxy or other dimension more important, unconditional love"

I searched everywhere on the internet looking for answers to this quote and came up empty handed.  I will be back and snooping around into this mystery next year.
Last but not least... The Island Roxy

I have mixed reviews on the origin of this theatre whether it dates to 1961 or 1945.  Regardless, it's claim to fame came when Misty, a book written by Marguerite Henry was made a move in 1961 by 20th Century Fox.  The book and movie were filmed in Chincoteague and based on Chincoteague pony, Misty who {as rumor has it} during opening night ran down the center aisle of the theatre.  Misty was also commemorated by stamping her hooves in the cement outside the ticket booth which are still visible today.
I hope one day you can visit Chincoteague and Assateague Island to find "hidden treasures" of your own.  Until them enjoy mine!!  Happy Friday!!!

Chincoteague + Assateague Island {road trip}

Chincoteague Island was mine and Joseph's first official vacation after our honeymoon.   We traveled 6 hours to this small town and we both instantly felt a connection to it.  {It could have something to do with with aftermath, 9 months later out popped Zoe.}  It reminds me of all the things I use to love about my hometown {Surf City, NC} before all the tourists moved in.  A quant little fishing town with loads of hidden treasures just waiting to be appreciated, kids riding bikes, bed and breakfasts, fisherman coming in from the docks, old shacks, fried seafood, hand carved decoy and most importantly genuine, good hearted people.  It's amazing, how age makes you miss things that we so often took for granted in the past.

Assateague Island is nestled on the eastern shore of Virginia and Maryland.  It's approximately 37 miles long with 2/3 of its northern island in Maryland and 1/3 of the southern island in Virginia.  The southern part of the island is called the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.  There is no one road connecting the two bordering states on the island.  Therefore, when we have only visited the Virginian side of Assateague Island.  It's know for it's lighthouse, bird habitats and it's annual Pony Penning. {more info}

For the past couple of years, I have been taking my kids back to Chincoteague Island, VA.    We had the privilege of meeting some "locals" on our first trip and over the past 10 years, we now consider them family.  My kids now refer to them as Aunt Dee and Uncle Red and they have all the love and admiration as if they were their own.

My family and I are in Chincoteague now.  "Pony Penning takes place the last week of July.  It is a once in a lifetime event that after this week, we will now have had the privilege of seeing twice.  Once a year, they corral all the wild ponies and horses to the tip of the island where they swim across the channel onto the mainland.  After, a brief rest, Saltwater Cowboys herd them down Main Street to the local fire department where they are auctioned off the following morning.

Last years auction raised $99,500 for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department, 69 horses were sold, lowest bid was $450 and the highest bid was $6,700.

{Pictures were taken during last years visit.}

Every road trip needs a song.  This is one of my daughter's favorites from Flicka, her favorite movie.

Summer Sessions {accessories}

That was fast.  I am referring to the speed of Summer, it's flying by.  Only 2 more Friday's left in July which means only 2 more Summer Session posts to go!

Today's post is possible my favorite out of the Summer Sessions' because I love accessories.  Always have and always will.  With everything in life, accessories make it more beautiful.

Do we need them?  No.  But..... do we want them?  Yes!!!

My favorite beach bag is Four Boys Scout Bag.  {Click here to buy.}  It's HUGE and it fits everything.  The bag itself is weightless so I can pack it full.  Scout bags are perfect for the beach since their fabrics are waterproof and super easy to clean.  {I also use mine for carrying Christmas presents during the holidays.}  When I am at the beach, my favorite "tag along" accessories are a camera, a radio and something to read.

I am a camera junkie.  I love photography and I adore taking pictures of my babies.  I do see one of these fabulous cameras in my near future.  Made by Lomography, these point and shoot cameras are perfect for the beach.  This series is the La Sardina due to their  sardine can size.  Each camera is one-of-a-kind and runs off of 35mm film.  The neat thing {as if what I haven't already told you isn't enough} it is plastic and has a wide angle lens!  {Click here to buy!}

As I stated earlier, I must have a radio and something to read.  The beach is my place to relax!  I love music.  I also love to read however, I am much pickier with my reading than my music.

I love on iTunes that you can copy people's playlist.  Some of my favorites are created by SELF magazine.  All you have to do is login to your iTunes and follow them in Ping.  This is a great way to add new music to your library and it's super easy!!

One of my favorite's is Press "Play" for a Better Day.

1.  "Rolling in the Deep" ~ Adele
2.  "No Such Thing" ~ John Mayer
3.  "Brand New Day" ~ Sting
4.  "She Will Be Loved" ~ Maroon 5
5.  "Beautiful Day" ~ U2
6.  "Adagio for Strings Op. 11" ~ Samuel Barber
7.  "Fly me to the Moon" ~ Frank Sinatra
{to buy the whole playlist click here}

Rihanna's iTunes Celebrity Playlist Podcast

1.  "Best I Ever Had" ~ Drake
2.  "Closer" ~ Kings of Leon
3.  "Young Forever" ~ Jay-Z
4.  "Venus vs. Mars" ~ Jay-Z
5.  "I Gotta Feeling" ~ The Black Eyed Peas
6.  "La La La" ~ LMFAO
7.  "Throw it in the bag" (Remix) ~ Fabolous
8.  "Party in the USA" ~ Miley Cyrus
9.  "Thinking of You" ~ Katy Perry
10.  "Umbrella" ~ Rihanna

For the past 3 months, I have also been submerging myself with Lionel Richie's Tuskegee Album which has been the top selling album for the past 6 months. {click here for more info}

1. "You Are" with Blake Shelton
2.  "Say You, Say Me" with Jason Aldean

10.  "Just For You" with Billy Currington
11.  "Lady" with Kenny Rogers
12.  "Easy" with Willie Nelson
13.  "All Night Long" with Jimmy Buffett

I also love my Pandora radio!  My favorite channel is one made with "Starships" by Nicki Minaj.

My favorite summer reads were.....

1.  50 Shades of Grey Trilogy by E. L. James
2.  Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
3.  Summer Rental by Mary Kay Andrews
4.  Steve Jobs Autobiography by Walter Isaacson

Revenge {i heart wednesdays}

I do love Wednesdays.

My Wednesdays are equivalent to everyone else's Sunday.  Every hump day {no pun intended!!} my husband is off work and it's our family day.  'Tis the reasoning {i heart wednesdays}.

This week I wanted to share my latest obsession, REVENGE!!

What started as a Tuesday night movie marathon with my mom ended in complete isolations for 2 days till I watched all 22 episodes from Season Ones. I am not one to sit and watch TV.  However, a pulled muscle in my back last week was my excuse to be a couch potato for 2 days therefore, was my new BFF.

Who doesn't love Madeleine Stowe?  At the age of 53, she was named one of People Magazines, Most Beautiful People.  She is stunning and elegant which is perfectly portrayed in her part as "Queen Victoria" who will reign over all of Grayson Manor where she has well guarded and buried her deepest, darkest secret.  Let's just say, ALL of Hampton is rocked when Mrs. Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) moves in next door and steals Mrs. Grayson son's heart.  Coincidence?....  No.  All just part of Emily's plan to reveal Victoria's closet of skeletons.

As many, ABC followers were crushed when Lost finally went off-air.  Revenge was a "shoe in" for demographics, age 18-49 replacing the Wednesday night 9 pm air time of Lost.  You still have time to catch up before Season Two starts back mid-September on Sunday nights at 9 pm.  Move over Desperate Housewives, you've just been kicked to the curb.

Summer Sessions {necessities}

This weeks topic is beach necessities.  The usual are the chair and the towel.  Chair for the front and towel for the flip side, so we can tan both sides evenly of course.  However, the necessities don't just stop at the chair and towel.
Now-a-days, it includes a slight bit more.....
Since, I'm the mother of two, my "necessities" has increased from few to many, therefore #1 on my list is {Rio Wonder Wheelerbeach caddy.  I don't know about you but when I go to the beach it looks like I took everything but my kitchen sink.  I have to unload it myself {since Daddy is working}.  I give the kids their towel, boogie board and whatever sand bucket they choose.  Then on the miserable trip down the dune, there is usually, complaining by one {if not both} of the kids.  "Its too heavy" or "I'm tired" which results in me carrying it all.  By the time I reach that "perfect spot" on the beach I need an adult beverage and a nap.  With that being said, I love my caddy.
There are a couple different options for a beach caddy depending on your needs.
Here are 4 more options if the Beach Caddy doesn't work for you.
{from left to right}
1.  Pagoda Blue Beach Cart - With a powder-coated steal tube frame and a water-resistant polyester tote, this Cart has wide wheels and a handle that were made for navigating through sand and other tough terrain. It folds up for easy storage, too!

2.  Copa Cargo Table Beach Cart - A mesh storage pocket is perfect for towels, water bottles, and other items, and the detachable wheels roll on just about any surface.When you're done unloading and need a resting place for books, drinks, food, phones, or whatever, don't worry, this cart's got your back. Simply flip it over and you've got yourself a sturdy, dependable table.
snacks, music

3.  Rio Go-Cart Wonder Wheeler - Crafted with a powder-coated steel frame and topped in rugged polyester fabric this trusty cart holds up to three beach chairs. With durable 7-inch wheels that roll easily over pesky beach sand this uniquely practical piece is an ideal beach companion. Each cart is equipped with a mesh storage pocket on the back.

4.  Rio Beach Cart - Crafted out of plastic with durable 7-inch wheels can still get the job done and roll over they hard to manage beach sand.  Collapsible and made in the U.S.A.  Currently on sale.  Click the link above.

Let's not forget the FOOD {and drink}......

When headed to the beach with kids it can be tricky bringing the right foods.  They must be durable in the heat while still tasty to the little ones.  I also consider if the food has a high water content like fruits since mine don't like to stop their fun and drink.

To drink

Store Bought Ideas
1.  water
2.  gatorade
3.  lemonade
4.  apple juice

Homemade Goodness
1.  Cucumber & Lemonade Water ~ Mix 2L water, 1 sliced cucumber, 2 lemons and 12 mint leaves.   Steep overnight and enjoy!
2.  Orangeade ~ Ratio is 8 cups green tea, 1 sliced orange {squeezed) and a handful of mint leaves
3.  Cantaloupe Water ~ If you have a juicer.  Peel the cantaloupe and juice it.  {No Juicer, no worries.  Just blend it till it's liquified.}  Add 6 cups of water, stevia to taste {or sugar} and ice.  You can also freeze this and eat like a slushy.

To eat

1.  Peanut Butter and anything!!  PB and J, PB and crackers, PB and apples, PB and celery, PB and marshmallows, add any combo you like.  My favorite is bananas, PB and granola.
2.  Nuts and dried fruit, if your kids will eat it.  Mine will if M&M's are mixed in :)
3.  Frozen Fruit ~  If I am running low on time I will throw grapes, blueberries or strawberries in the freezer while we are getting ready {like 20 to 30 minutes}.  Then I throw them in the cooler and they are a frozen treat for later.  My kids favorite is the grapes.
4.  A bucket of Fried Chicken ~ Trying to beat the crowd to the beach?  Pickup some good ol' fried chicken and throw it in the bag and go!
5.  Homemade Sandwiches and Wraps - Although my kids won't eat them.  They eat them throughout the school year at lunch so they boycott them during the summer.  However, I still make them for myself.

For more great ideas, check out.... Super Healthy Kids
Don't forget to check back next Friday for "must-have" summer accessories.

What are your beach necessities?

Summer Session {sunscreens + more}

This week I'm going to cover just a few ways to protect your skin at the beach!  I love the sun however, I also love my sunscreen.
A sun protectant is more than just sunscreen, it's hats, coverups, sunglasses and umbrellas.

Sunscreen isn't just for the beach.  I use it everyday on my face, religiously!!
When I am 40, I want to look 30.  SunBum is my absolute favorite {Buy it here!}.  The smell is delicious and it works great.  There is a surplus of options to choose from, so how does one choose?

There are two different types of UltraViolent rays we should be protecting ourselves from: UVA = aging rays and UVB = burning rays.  That's why it's so important to choose a sunscreen that protects against both.  UVB rays cause cancer and UVA make you look old. Since we don't want either of these, wear your sunscreen daily!!!

1.  "Broad Spectrum" - This means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
2.  "Sun Protection Factor" - The higher the SPF doesn't mean you don't have to reapply.  SPF simply lets you know how much longer you can stay in the sun BEFORE reapplying.  For example, if it takes 10 minutes in the sun for you to burn, a sunscreen with a 15 SPF will allow you to stay 15 times longer in the sun than if you weren't wearing any at all.

3.  "Waterproof or Water-Resistant" - These are a must if you are planning on being in the water.  Waterproof formulas will last approximately 80 minutes before they will break down and need to be reapplied.  Water-resistant will only last about 40 minutes before reapplying is needed.

4.  Chemical vs. Physical Sunscreens - learn the different and choose which method is right for you. Chemical vs. Physical Chart
{according to}

Tips for APPLYING SUNSCREEN to your face.

1.  Sunscreen goes on AFTER moisturizers but BEFORE makeup!!

2.  If you are wearing a "chemical sunscreen" it's best to wait 30 minutes before going into the sun.

3.  Apply at least a 1/4 of a teaspoon for you face which is approximately the size of a nickel.

4.  Pat it on.  Do not rub, you will cause more wrinkles and damage to your skin.

5.  Reapply every 2 hours for continuous coverage.  Avoid the sun, if you use retina or any other exfoliating product in your daily skin regimen.

{for inquiries about any items above message me!}

For the best protection, just stay in doors.  Yeah, right!!  Instead, stock up on your 50 shades of protection and go for it.
